Your Day Tour in Lovech

Our tour starts at 9:00 from your hotel/accommodation in Sofia. After two hours drive on a highway and major road we will reach the town center of Lovech. We will spend two hours visiting the old quarter, the covered wooden bridge, the fortification and the museum of Vassil Levski, Bulgaria's most famous revolutionary hero. At the end of the tour we will sit in a lovely restaurant and have some typical Bulgarian meals. As we enter you can choose to have your lunch at the lovely wooden porch or on a table under the pine trees.

At this point you will have three options:

A. We will head towards Devetashka cave. After 30 minutes we will reach this nature beauty, where scenes of "The Expendable" 2 film were shot. The cave itself is an amazing karst formation, which will leave you breathless. Two massive holes on the top allow the sunbeams to enter the vast space, offering Devetaki a very mystical view. The cave was also home of the local population between Paleolitic and Bronze ages. In communism era it was used as a fuel warehouse especially during the Cold war. Remains of the cisterns are still visible.

B.We head towards Krushuna area where we can take an amazing walk through the beautiful forest and along the stream that has formed beautiful cascades of blue waterfalls.

C. We drive south to Troyan monastery. Currently Bulgaria's third largest, the monastery in the village of Oreshak will open its gates and reveal to you its huge contribution to the Bulgarian revolutionary history. Established somewhere in the beginning of the 1600s, Troyan Monastery played a huge role in the April Uprising in 1876, as well as many revolutionary heroes have found shelter behind its stone walls, including Vassil Levski. The church "Dormition of Mary", painted in the 19th century is one of the best examples of the art and work of Zacharii Zograf, Bulgaria's most talented artist during the Revival period, who also painted the Rila Monastery church.

Around 16:00h we will start heading back to Sofia and arrive approximately at 18:30 to your hotel.

Lovech overview

Protected by a huge fortress, home of two Bulgarian emperors, Lovech can be considered as one of the most beautiful towns in the country. Small of size (only 35,000 citizens) but very old, Lovech will impress you with its cobblestone old quarter, called Varosha and its covered wooden bridge built by the greatest Bulgarian master Kolio Ficheto in the 19th century.

Inhabited from the late Neolithic period, Lovech is fortified for the first time by the Romans and eventually becаme a home town of two Bulgarian emperors - Ivan Alexander Asen and Ivan Sracimir, Bulgaria's last medieval ruler. Sacked by the Ottomans in 1446, the town changed its cityscape in typical Oriental style, with streets full of craftsmen shops.

Today Lovech is one of the province centers of Bulgaria with very well preserved old quarter, where the history will overwhelm you from the fortification to the covered wooden bridge above Osam river. Close to the town there are the beautiful Devetashka cave and the Krushuna waterfalls, both impressive nature beauties.

On our tour you will be able to choose one of them or to visit Troyan monastery, Bulgaria's third largest monastery in the nearby town of Troyan.
