Your Half Day Excursion to Vitosha Mountain

Door to door service (you will be picked up from your hotel in Sofia). After a short 40min drive to a hut “Momina skala” (Virgin’s Rock), our walk will begin. The destination is Boyana waterfall, one of the most beautiful places in Vitosha mountain. It is situated on 1260 meters altitude and the fall of the water is 40 meters.

After the waterfall we have an option to go to another well maintained hut for lunch or tea and snack before going back to the vehicle. Afterwards we will make our way down to the TV Tower of Kopitoto, with a quick stop-over at Zlatni Mostove or Golden Bridges area to enjoy the beautiful “stone river” or “moreni river” where you can have a great view over the city of Sofia. From there we will get back to the city (your accommodation) where the tour ends.

Vitosha Overview

Vitosha is the favorite place for recreation for the capital’s population of over one and a half million people. Vitosha Mountain symbolizes the cradle of Bulgarian hiking and tourism. The 27th of August, 1895 was the day when the famous writer and intellectual Aleko Konstantinov organized the first mountain hike in the history of the country. His goal: the highest peak of the mountain, Cherni vrah, or ‘Black Peak’, rising at 2290 m (7513 ft) above sea level.

A typical feature of the local landscape is the ‘stone river’ – a collection of huge boulders, polished round by erosion which visually resembles moraines. Among the most famous stone rivers are the one close to the Zlatnite Mostove area, which is a major tourist attraction. On the territory of the mountain there live nearly 1500 species of vascular plants, 80 of these are rare and protected species, and 22 are Bulgarian or Balkan endemic plants, that is to say they grow only in Bulgaria or on the Balkan Peninsula. There are over 200 species of birds in Vitosha, some large mammals: red and roe deer, chamois, wolves, and a few roaming bears. But don’t worry! For the last two centuries there have been no records of large carnivore attacks on humans in Vitosha.
