Overview of Niš
Niš, the third-largest city in Serbia and one of the oldest in the Balkans and Europe, has long served as a vital gateway between East and West. Initially named Navissos by the Scordisci after their invasion in 279 BC, the city was later incorporated into the Roman Empire in 75 BC. Furthermore, the Romans constructed the Via Militaris in the 1st century, establishing Naissus as a key town and the birthplace of Constantine the Great, the first Christian Emperor and founder of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul).
In addition to its ancient significance, Niš is home to one of Serbia’s oldest churches, dating back to the 4th century and located in the Medijana suburb. This Roman site preserves a granary, craft center, thermae, and a villa adorned with intricate mosaics. Notably, these mosaics include geometric and floral designs, along with depictions of Medusa and a river deity, likely Neptune. Meanwhile, the museum showcases Roman sculptures, daily utensils, and remnants of lead pipes from the nearby Niska Banja spa.
Moreover, the city features Cele Kula (Skull Tower), constructed by the Turks in 1809 to suppress Serbian uprisings, and the Nazi concentration camp, a grim relic from World War II. Interestingly, the camp also tells a story of resistance, as some prisoners managed to escape.
Altogether, Niš offers a compelling blend of ancient heritage and stories of resilience, making it a treasure trove of history.
