Vitosha and Boyana Waterfall Tour
Vitosha is the favorite place for recreation for the capital’s population of over one and a half million people. Vitosha Mountain symbolizes the cradle of Bulgarian hiking and tourism. The 27th of August, 1895 was the day when the famous writer and intellectual Aleko Konstantinov organized the first mountain hike in the history of the country. His goal: the highest peak of the mountain, Cherni vrah, or ‘Black Peak’, rising at 2290 m (7513 ft) above sea level.
A typical feature of the local landscape is the ‘stone river’ – a collection of huge boulders, polished round by erosion which visually resembles moraines. Among the most famous stone rivers are the one close to the Zlatnite Mostove area, which is a major tourist attraction. On the territory of the mountain there live nearly 1500 species of vascular plants, 80 of these are rare and protected species, and 22 are Bulgarian or Balkan endemic plants, that is to say they grow only in Bulgaria or on the Balkan Peninsula. There are over 200 species of birds in Vitosha, some large mammals: red and roe deer, chamois, wolves, and a few roaming bears. But don’t worry! For the last two centuries there have been no records of large carnivore attacks on humans in Vitosha.
Vitosha is a beloved recreational spot for the over one and a half million people living in Sofia, making it a central part of the city’s outdoor culture. Symbolizing the birthplace of Bulgarian hiking and tourism, Vitosha holds historical significance as the site of the first mountain hike, organized by the renowned writer Aleko Konstantinov on August 27, 1895, aiming for the peak of Cherni Vrah. One of the most distinctive features of the landscape is the “stone river,” a collection of large boulders smoothed by erosion, especially notable near the Zlatnite Mostove area. The mountain is also home to a diverse ecosystem, with nearly 1,500 species of plants, including rare and protected species, and over 200 bird species, along with mammals like deer, chamois, and wolves. Despite the presence of large mammals, Vitosha has seen no reports of carnivore attacks on humans for over two centuries, offering a safe and vibrant environment for outdoor enthusiasts.
