The name of the town literally means "small white town," which is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River. It has been known as a settlement since the Roman period and has passed through all the Bulgarian history. As a guard of this heritage stands the medieval fortress. The place is famous for its unique and impressive rock formations, the Belogradchik Rocks, which cover an area of 90 square kilometers and reach up to 200 meters in height. They were also nominated for the new Seven Wonders of the World.
