Overview
Tour itinerary for Belogradchik and Venetsa Cave group tour
- 8:30 Departure from Serdika Meeeting Point (2, Maria Luiza boulevard across McDonalds next to the Mosque) – a scenic but mountainous 3h drive through Petrohan Balkan range pass with consecutive turns.
- 11:30 Walk uphill to the top part of the fortress. On the way we can enjoy the funny-looking forms of the rocks and use our imagination to “see” the figures of the Madonna, the Rabbit, the Turtle, The Ice-Age Squirrel, the Rebel and many more, learn the history of the Fortress during the different periods, hear the frightening legends of prisoners and rebels. The parking lot offers some nice souvenir shops, a good variety of wine and rakia (local strong brandy) from the Magura cave wine cellar.
- 13:00 A short drive to a nearby newly-opened cave Venetsa (The Wreath), very well organised and beautifully lit with colorful led lamps. It contains only natural formations. After the visit a quick lunch may be offered (paid extra) if time permits.
- 16:00 Departure to Sofia.
- 18:30 Return to Serdika Meeeting Point in the center of Sofia.
The itinerary may vary depending on road conditions, weather, traffic or other. Please note that the drive to Belogradchik is fairly long and mostly mountainous and with turns on the way to Belogradchik.
Belogradchik overview
The name of the town literally means “small white town,” which is situated in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains just east of the Serbian border and about 50 km south of the Danube River. It has been known as a settlement since the Roman period and has passed through all the Bulgarian history. As a guard of this heritage stands the medieval fortress. The place is famous for its unique and impressive rock formations, the Belogradchik Rocks, which cover an area of 90 square kilometers and reach up to 200 meters in height. They were also nominated for the new Seven Wonders of the World.
Venetsa cave overview
Venetsa is a fairly small cave, discovered by accident in 1970 and opened recently with beautiful colourful lights over the icy stalactites, stalagmites, stalactons, argonite crystals. The interior is scattered with colourful crystals due to crystallisation of water and minerals forming a splendid jewel-like temple! The constant 10C temperature and wet air makes your 40 minute visit pleasant during summer hot months and cold during winter.
