Your Sofia Full day Private tour

We begin our tour with a visit to Boyana Church, the only UNESCO World Heritage monument near Sofia, where, despite its small size, the frescoes offer an immense contribution to the world history of art. Afterward, we head to the National History Museum, where you will be guided through Bulgaria’s 14-century history. By now, our hunger for knowledge and a delicious local meal grows, so we will stop at a hidden gem of a restaurant, established in 1927, to continue discussing topics like communism, the Soviet era, the Turkish occupation, and Bulgaria’s involvement in both World Wars. In the afternoon, we will park at Alexander Nevsky Square to visit the largest church in the Balkans before exploring the catacombs of St. Sofia Church from the Byzantine era. Our walk will continue through landmarks such as the Russian Church, the National Theater and its garden, the Rotunda St. George, Roman remains, and conclude at the Bania Bashi Mosque with the nearby thermal springs.

Tour itinerary for Sofia Full Day Private tour

We start our tour with the only UNESCO World Heritage monument in the vicinity of Sofia – Boyana Church – small in size and it only takes 30 min to visit, but its frescoes have an enormous contribution to the world history of art. Then we will visit the National History Museum, which will guide you though the 14-century long history of Bulgaria. By that time our hunger for knowledge and local delicious meal is strong enough for a visit to a little secret restaurant, established in 1927, where we continue with pleasure our chat about the topics you are interested in – communism soviet era, Turkish occupation, participation of Bulgaria in World War 1 and 2 and many more.

In the afternoon we will park our vehicle at Alexander Nevski Square for a visit of the largest church on the Balkans, followed by an underground tour of St. Sofia Church catacombs from Byzantine time. We continue with a stroll to the Russian church, the National Theater and its garden, the Rotunda St.George (round church), the Roman remains and we finish our walk by the Mosque Bania Bashi and the thermal springs nearby.

Sofia Overview

Sofia is the contemporary capital of Bulgaria. Its population grew rapidly during the Communist-Socialist era (1944-1989). At the time of the liberation from the Turks in 1878, the population of the city was 11,649 inhabitants and for a few decades after that the city experienced large population growth mainly from other regions of the country.

During World War 2, Sofia was bombed by allied aircrafts in late 1943 and early 1944. Unfortunately a huge part of the city center was destroyed. As a consequence of the invasion of the Soviet Red Army, Bulgaria’s government, which was allied with Germany, was overthrown. The transformations of Bulgaria into a People’s Republic in 1946 and Republic of Bulgaria marked significant changes in the city’s appearance. The population of Sofia expanded rapidly due to migration from the country. Whole new residential areas were built in the outskirts of the city, like Druzhba, Mladost and Lyulin.
