Rila Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as the Rila Monastery is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Founded in the 10th century, the Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria’s most important cultural, historical and architectural monuments and is a must-visit tourist attraction for both Bulgarians and foreign visitors.

The monastery complex, regarded as one of the most impressive masterpieces of Bulgarian National Revival architecture, was declared a national historical monument in 1976 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

What truly makes the Boyana Church world-famous, however, are its frescoes from 1259. These frescoes, which form a second layer over earlier paintings, represent one of the most complete and well-preserved examples of Eastern European medieval art. Notably, the church’s walls feature 89 scenes, showcasing a total of 240 human figures. As a result, the Boyana Church stands as a remarkable and invaluable treasure of both art and history.

The group tour is available every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

А minimum group of 3 persons is required to run the tour, fully refundable if cancelled. Had a really good day trip to Nis with this company. It was very organised with excellent communication beforehand and during, and smooth comfortable travelling in the vehicle. It was really interesting to visit all the different locations and learn a bit more about the history, even though some of it wasn’t always pleasant such as the visit to the concentration camp.
