Your Balkan Loop Tour

Our journey begins at 8:00 from Sofia, where we will enjoy a scenic drive westward along the Balkan range, heading toward the Serbian-Bulgarian border. After approximately two hours, we will arrive in the charming historic town of Nis, where we’ll delve into the city’s rich heritage and then savor a delicious lunch at a traditional restaurant in the old town. Following a leisurely stroll along the main street and park, we will continue our road trip south to Macedonia, where we’ll spend the night. The next morning, after a hearty breakfast, we’ll explore Skopje’s city center and its famous landmarks, before taking a relaxing chairlift ride up Vodno Mountain for breathtaking panoramic views. Finally, after enjoying lunch at a scenic restaurant, we will conclude our adventure with a four-hour drive back to Sofia.

Overview

Itinerary for Balkan Loop Tour

We begin our tour at 8:00 from Sofia with a relaxed scenic drive to the West along the Balkan range (Stara planina or Old mountain) to the Serbian-Bulgarian border and in about 2 hours we reach the beautiful historic town of Nis. We will explore the city’s heritage and we will have lunch in some restaurant in the old part. After another stroll around the main street and park, we will continue our road trip south to Macedonia and stay the night there.

 

The next morning after a good breakfast we will pay a visit to Skopje’s center and highlights. Then we will enjoy a short chair lift ride to the nearby mountain of Vodno, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city of Skopje. The place also offers a beautiful restaurant. After a nice lunch we will proceed with a 4 hour trip back to Sofia.

Nis Overview

Nis is a big city in Serbia. It has a very long history and important role in the events on the Balkans. Established by the Thracians, developed by the Romans as Nissus, situated on Via Diagonalis road is the birthplace of Constantine the Great.

The history of the city is going trough Bulgarian, Ottoman and finally Serbian period. All of the stages are still visible and will put you in a time machine. The highlights of Nis are Medijana, Roman villa, connected with Constantine’s family, The Skull tower, built and decorated with human skulls by the Ottomans after an uprising against them, the fortress and a Nazi concentration camp. Also Serbians are famous because of their grilled meat. Not to miss!

Skopje Overview

Skopje is the capital of Macedonia (FYROM) and it is the perfect place to see how history is used to create identity. The town has been inhabited since the Prehistorical times. It was a military Roman camp, but its flourishing moments were during the Bulgarian kingdom. It was a Bulgarian capital between 972-992.

After that it was part of the Byzantine empire and between 1081 and 1088 was conquered by the Normans. Now Skopje has a monumental new city center, which makes an interesting combination with the old parts of the town. The highlights that you will be able to visit are : The Medieval fortress, the old cozy streets, the house museum of Mother Teresa and other.
