Your Melnik and Wine Tasting Tour

Your travel guide will pick you up from your hotel in Sofia, and after a scenic drive through diverse landscapes, including highways, mountains, river canyons, and valleys, you will arrive in the Melnik region.

Our first stop will be Rojen village, where we will visit the historic Rozhen Monastery, the third most important monastery in Bulgaria. Next, we will head to the town of Melnik, where you’ll explore a historical house once owned by a wealthy wine-trading family in the mid-18th century, and have the opportunity to enjoy time in their private cellar, with a possible stroll through the smallest town in Bulgaria. Optionally, you can also visit the Wine Museum before we make our way to one of Bulgaria’s top wine cellars, either Villa Melnik or the certified organic Orbelus, for a guided tour and wine tasting.

Finally, after purchasing exceptional wines at a special price, we will begin our return journey to Sofia, with the option of extending your experience by staying overnight in Melnik for traditional food and dances. Melnik Overview

Melnik is declared an architectural reserve and it is one of the most famous wine regions in Bulgaria. The first recorded settlements were the Thracian tribes Medi (the famous Spartacus came from this tribe). The Slavs who came later in these territories, named the settlement Melnik due to the sand formations surrounding it on all sides. Melnik became a part of the First Bulgarian Empire under the rule of Khan Presian (836-852) and prospered significantly during this period. Melnik became the capital of an independent feudal principality ruled by Despot Alexius Slav in 1209 and had economic and cultural prosperity.

The town continued to flourish under Tsar Ivan Assen ІІ because of the duty-free trade with Dubrovnik (ruled by Venetians). In the late 18th century, the town had 1300 houses, seventy churches and a population of around 20,000 people.

Stefan was great! We were in a pinch and he drove us all the way to the airport. The tour its self was very well run and smooth. Couldn’t recommend more.

The trip was very interesting and leisurely attractive. Rila monastery is absolutely stunning and then we enjoyed the hottest thermal baths and swimming pools. What a lovely day!

Had a really good day trip to Nis with this company. It was very organised with excellent communication beforehand and during, and smooth comfortable travelling in the vehicle. It was really interesting to visit all the different locations and learn a bit more about the history, even though some of it wasn’t always pleasant such as the visit to the concentration camp. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly and gave a good mix of background information while also letting us find out more and explore the sites themselves, as well as going out of his way to make aure we had places we could eat/exchange money/pay with card in Nis itself.
