Moussala Peak Trekking Tour
Rila is a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria and the highest mountain range of Bulgaria and the Balkans, with its highest peak being Musala at 2 925 m. The massif is also the sixth highest mountain in Europe (when each mountain is represented by its highest peak only), coming after the Caucasus, the Alps,Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees and Mount Etna, and the highest between the Alps and the Caucasus. The larger part of the mountain is occupied by the Rila National Park.
The name Rila is believed to be of Thracian origin and is thought to mean “well-watered mountain”, owing to Rila’s abundance of glacial lakes (about 200) and hot springs in fault areas at the base of the mountain. Some of the Balkans’ longest and deepest rivers originate from Rila, including the Maritsa, the Iskar and the Mesta.
Rila is the highest mountain range in Bulgaria and the Balkans, with its peak Musala reaching 2,925 meters, and it is the sixth highest mountain in Europe when considering only the highest peak of each range. Situated in southwestern Bulgaria, the Rila massif is mainly protected within Rila National Park. The name “Rila” is thought to derive from Thracian, meaning “well-watered mountain,” which is fitting due to the abundance of glacial lakes and hot springs found in the area. Additionally, Rila is the source of some of the longest and deepest rivers in the Balkans, such as the Maritsa, Iskar, and Mesta. With its rich natural beauty, Rila offers a unique combination of impressive peaks, serene lakes, and essential water resources for the region.

After a 1h 20min ride to the oldest ski resort in Bulgaria Borovets we take a gondola lift to Yastrebets hut. The hiking departure point is the upper station of the gondola from where to the top we walk on a marked trail, passing by the Muslenski lakes, located in a circus between 2388 and 2715m. Reaching the highest peak on the Balkans is not difficult and does not require special climbing skills but walking. We go down the same way and take the gondola lift back to Borovets and return ride to Sofia along the Iskar dam.
