Overview of Rila Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, or Rila Monastery, is the largest and most renowned Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Founded in the 10th century, it is considered one of the country’s most important cultural, historical, and architectural landmarks, making it a must-see destination for both Bulgarians and foreign visitors. In the 14th century, the monastery was rebuilt at its present location, with the oldest structures dating back to this period, such as the Tower of Hrelyu (1334–1335) and a small church (1343). However, following the Ottoman arrival at the end of the 14th century, the monastery faced multiple raids, culminating in its destruction in the mid-15th century.

Recognized as a masterpiece of Bulgarian National Revival architecture, the complex was declared a national historical monument in 1976 and later became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. Furthermore, in 2002, Pope John Paul II visited the monastery during his pilgrimage to Bulgaria, where he was warmly greeted by Bishop Ioan, the monastery’s igumen.
