An overview of Skopje

Skopje, the largest city in Northern Macedonia, enchants visitors with its rich and turbulent history. Over the centuries, it has been highly sought after by empires competing for dominance, which has profoundly shaped its unique and diverse character. At every corner, the city reveals an intricate tapestry of cultures and influences, each adding to its charm.

The story of Skopje begins with the Thracians, who laid its foundations by establishing the Scupi fortress. As time passed, the city transitioned through various hands, becoming part of the Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian, and, briefly, Serbian empires. In 1392, the Ottomans seized control, renaming it Uskub and transforming it into a thriving cultural hub that attracted Ottomans, Bulgarians, and Albanians alike.

Later, in 1912, the city was liberated during the First Balkan War. However, it faced further upheavals during the two world wars before ultimately becoming the Macedonian capital in Yugoslavia. Although a devastating earthquake struck in 1963, Skopje rose from the ruins and reinvented itself, emerging stronger as the capital of an independent Macedonia and flourishing both economically and culturally.
