Vitosha is a mountain in the outskirts of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is one of the tourist’s symbols of Sofia and the nearest site for skiing, hiking, walking or rock climbing.

Vitosha has the outlines of an enormous dome. The mountain emerged as a result of volcanic activity and has been subsequently shaped by the slow folding of the granite rock layers and a series of gradual uplifts of the area. The territory of the mountain includes Vitosha nature park that encompasses the best known and most frequently visited parts. Vitosha is the oldest nature park on the Balkans since 1934. Cherni Vrah (“Black Peak”) is the highest point of the mountain at 2290 m and is one of 10 peaks of Vitosha over 2000 m in height.

Vitosha, located on the outskirts of Sofia, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and the closest destination for skiing, hiking, and rock climbing. This majestic mountain, shaped like a massive dome, was formed through ancient volcanic activity and later sculpted by gradual geological uplifts. Encompassing its most visited areas, Vitosha Nature Park, established in 1934, holds the distinction of being the oldest nature park in the Balkans. Among its many peaks, Cherni Vrah (“Black Peak”) stands as the highest at 2,290 meters, accompanied by nine other summits exceeding 2,000 meters. Ultimately, Vitosha’s rich natural beauty and accessibility make it a favorite retreat for both locals and tourists.

Overview

Itinerary for Vitosha Walking Tour

Only 30 minutes away from the Sofia city center, the mountain offers quick and easy access. The highest peak – Cherni vruh (The Black Peak) is 2290 meters high and can be reached in about 2 hours on a marked trail from Aleko Hut and ski center – 1810 m above sea level. Once we leave the vehicle behind in Aleko area, we have several options to approach the peak – steep straight trek, following the dirt road or even a longer version through Bistrishko Branishte reserve, where the mountain offers a lot of open view areas towards the city of Sofia.

We expect to reach Cherni vruh around 12:00 where we can have a nice rest and tea or lunch in the hut on the top. A quick 1.5 hours trek will take us back to the vehicle around 14:30 and we should be at the Monastery of Dragalevtsi around 15:00. An hour time for a visit in the beautiful Monastery complex from the 14th century and you will be back to your Sofia hotel around 16:30.

IMPORTANT: The same trekking tour can be arranged in the winter (with or without snowshoes)!
